Dr. med. Emil Hartogh, Hamburg, formerly of Wandsbeck, took his own life on 28th November 1938. Dr. H., who was a Christian non-Aryan and lived in Wandsbeck at Claudiusstraße 20, was one of the most eminent doctors in the area. He had so taken to heart the attacks that were repeatedly directed against him by the National Socialists – his name appeared amongst others on a handbill distributed in Wandsbeck that bore the headline, “Which Jewish enterprises are there in Wandsbeck?“ – and the loss of his practice, that he has now taken his own life, after one suicide attempt had already failed. Dr. Hartogh was 63 years old.
