The number of arrests in Vienna is not assessable, according to reliable information it is said to be at least 25-30,000 people. Elderly people and some of those who can prove immediate departure have meanwhile been released with quite short deadlines for departure; however during the time of their imprisonment they were mostly treated in a very unpleasant way personally. The number of the injured and wounded is said to amount to 1,000 to 1,500 people.

For the purpose of accomplishing the mass arrests even private lorries have been requisitioned. The arrested men came to all the possible buildings, an acquaintance e.g. who was able to extricate himself as the result of an English permit and arrived here yesterday, told that with hundreds of others he came to a stable at the Vienna police barracks, and that there they were indeed treated like animals. For six days no young Jewish man was to be seen on the street or in his home or in his shop. They were in hiding in cellars and in attics or in the vicinity of the city. Many a time Aryans who were outraged at the events gave them shelter.

In Graz the entire male Jewish population has been arrested. My last report about the numerous arrests of Jewish doctors [B. 25], even those who only recently were accredited as ‘Jewish Krankenbehandler’, is illustrated by the fact that the chairman of the Kultusgemeinde hospital, chief physician Borak, was arrested and has only been released after intervention by the Kultusgemeinde.

The “visitors” have repeatedly thrown the furnishings of homes and clothes onto the street or into the courtyard and held an “auction”, insofar as they did not take them away themselves. – At least 250 suicides are to be recorded, the number of the starving goes into the thousands.

The former President of the Kultusgemeinde, Dr. Friedmann, is in Buchenwald, though not in the concentration camp but under Polizeiarrest. The condition of Oberbaurat Stricker in Dachau is said to be very poor. The Vienna Rabbi Dr. Frankfurter, David Frankfurter’s uncle, held for almost six months in prison and concentration camp because of this family relationship, has been released. The situation with Reg. Rat  Dr. Oppenheim is unchanged.

My information about the ban on preaching by the Vienna rabbis rested on the ambiguous interpretation of a piece of news that the rabbis are not “functioning”. This can be understood because they have all been robbed of their office, as apart from the Seitenstettentempel all the community and society synagogues in Vienna have been completely destroyed in dynamite bomb attacks.
