Metz, 20th November 1938
Dear Herr X.,
I am writing to you in the name of your cousin. She asks me to inform you that all her furniture has been destroyed. I myself travel there often and can only confirm it. Would it not be possible for you to obtain an Aufenthaltsgenehmigung in Holland for your relatives until the emigration to America? A stay in Germany is indeed impossible in the long term. One really does not know what is yet to come. I can only assure you that it was horrendous. All the synagogues in Trier have been destroyed, homes wrecked, people mistreated, it is not possible to put it into words …
Yours sincerely,
P.S. Clothes and jewellery have all been stolen.
